Ecological benefit
It is an incredibly vital larval host plant for the caterpillar stage of the Northern Pearly Eye butterfly, alongside several native woodland moths. Because it grows where other grasses cannot survive, it provides critical low-growing architectural cover and nesting structure for ground-nesting woodland birds and small amphibians. In late autumn and winter, local songbirds feed heavily on the grain-like seeds that cling to the rigid, upright stalks.
Notes
Naturally grows along the edges of sugar maple forests, semi-shaded rocky slopes, and oak-hickory savannah fragments. If planted in deeper, drier shade, it naturally holds a shorter, delicate 2-foot profile. If you plant it in rich soil with full sun, it will stretch closer to 4 feet. It is entirely immune to juglone, the toxic chemical produced by Black Walnut trees (Juglans nigra), making it a premium native choice for stabilizing the ground under tricky walnut canopies.
