Ecological benefit
Its late-season pollen and nectar are a vital lifeline for honeybees, bumblebees, and a massive array of native long-tongued and short-tongued bees preparing for winter. It serves as a critical larval host plant for several native insects, including the Dainty Sulphur butterfly (Nathalis iole), the Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui), and the Rigid Sunflower Borer moth.
Notes
Despite its unfortunate common name, it does not cause hay fever or sneezing. Its pollen is heavy and sticky, meaning it is transported exclusively by insects rather than the wind. Highly tolerant of seasonal flooding and heavy clay. It will require supplemental watering if planted in dry garden beds. Strong, fibrous root system helps stabilize soil along shorelines and in flood-prone areas
